One of the great things about hobby games is their chance to experiment. I certainly like the balanced nature of Settlers of Catan. I enjoy the same limits of risk in Settlers of Canaan. I like it when games combine dice, cards, and player interaction to provide an experience that can’t be compared to another. I’m willing to suspend disbelief.
Not so Settlers of Orion.
Orion is the first “dice-less” game that I’ve played where I kept several activated on the table at any point in the game, and even sat around allowing me to reroll the die. Instead of dealing cards face down in a flash you draw them down, and then you shuffle them back in. No dice.
However, I’m forced to admit that it’s a lot less fun to play with. In a dice game you have a picture in your mind of the scenario you’re thinking about. Yes, there’s really no other comparable game. I certainly don’t have to ‘draw a card’ to imagine what’s going to happen in Egypt. Still, I enjoy the thought of becoming ‘the Pharaoh’ and laying waste to the world.
In Orion, you start with an arsenal of eight heroes each with a specific resource. Resources include technology, money, or armies. They’re either built using random events or artificially. Resources add to a hero’s won condition, and if they exceed the maximum of seven, then the hero can retire in place. Thus, you can’t just draw a card to win. You have to keep fighting. Draw four cards and then decide which heroes you want to fight now. This will create both more of your resource pool, and also determine their order of retirement.
Now that you have your deck (Orion‘s term for hand), you can spend it to give a hero a card. Then you shuffle the deck into the total card pool to make fresh cards available. The rest is pretty standard play, and if you run out of cards before retiring, one of your activated heroes dies.
There are a lot of differences between the base game and this expansion. First, there are no building structures where your powerful features reside. Instead, the game has a specific list of heroes to collect and attach to different locations
