Why has the subgenre begun to fade even though records like Not Just Romantic remain popular and revered? The answer is simple: Though it all started with Yes in the ’70s, it would take the ’80s and ’90s to start developing a grassroots movement with the like-minded and the independent musicians of the era. With clear inspiration from Yes’s “Four Days” along with plenty of moderate electronica elements in its gushy sounding vocals and synthesizer, “Stairway #2” is proof that there’s plenty of discovery to be unearthed on the gem that is a Yes record. In my opinion, this was the sound the band was headed for on the album that never came to be. Having the hindsight of everything that happened after its release—which includes Jon Anderson not only kicking out the fellow songwriter/keyboardist Rick Wakeman from the band but leaving for his next solo record and his very public feud with bandleader and frontman Jon Syms—it is easier for us to see the forest for the trees that this cosmic track represents.
